Magoffin County comes up short at West Carter

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County suffered its second straight single-digit loss on the road as host West Carter, an opponent from the neighboring 16th Region, prevailed 69-62 on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County suffered its second straight single-digit loss on the road as host West Carter, an opponent from the neighboring 16th Region, prevailed 69-62 on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-2.

West Carter evened its record to 1-1 with the win.

Tyson Webb poured in a game-high 28 points to lead West Carter to the victory. Webb was 10-of-12 from the free throw line. He drained 4-of-5 3-point field goal attempts.

The Comets and Hornets swapped leads throughout the matchup.

Starting strong, Magoffin County outscored West Carter 19-15 in the opening quarter. However, West Carter used a 25-20 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 40-39 at halftime.

Battling back, Magoffin County outscored West Carter 15-10 in the third quarter.

But West Carter finished strong, outscoring the Hornets 19-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

West Carter shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field. The Comets shot 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from 3-point range.

West Carter shot 76.9 percent (20-of-26) from the free throw line.

Jackson Bond joined Webb in double figures in scoring for the Comets, posting nine points.

Six players accounted for all of West Carter’s scoring in the winning effort.

Magoffin County shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43) from the field. The Hornets were 6-of-12 (50 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line.

Isaiah Salyer paced Magoffin County offensively, scoring a team-high 17 points.

Narrowly missing a double-double, Aden Barnett added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets.

Joining Salyer and Barnett in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Ben Lafferty added 14 points.

Finishing one shot short of reaching double figures in scoring for the Hornets, Kaden Bowling posted nine points.

Grayson Whitaker (four points), Patrick Damron (two points) and Ethan Prewitt one point) accounted for Magoffin County’s additional scoring in the setback.
