PIKEVILLE — Magoffin County was limited as Pikeville pulled away to win 14-1 in five innings in a high school softball season opener at the University of Pikeville on Monday, March 17.
Pikeville set the tone early, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the opening inning.
Magoffin County trailed 14-0 before crossing home plate for the first and only time during its fifth at-bat.
Lexie Akers started in the circle for Pikeville and earned the win. Akers pitched three innings and recorded five strikeouts.
Finishing strong in the circle, Riley Johnson pitched the final two innings for Pikeville and struck out three Magoffin County batters.
Katie Carty and Ava Hensley each pitched two innings for Magoffin County in the season opener. Carty and Hensley logged one strikeout apiece. Pitching out of a starting role for Magoffin County, Carty absorbed the loss.
Pikeville scored 14 runs on 14 hits. Cate Salyers (three hits, two RBIs), Gracie Hall (two hits, two RBIs), Macey Wright (two hits, two RBIs), Maddie Gross (two hits, one RBI), Taylor Ritz (two hits), Catharine Walters (one hit, two RBIs), Hollie Bryant (one hit, two RBIs) and Raven Jones (one hit, one RBI) each produced offensively for Pikeville in the season opener. Providing a lift at the plate, Walters homered.
Magoffin County was held hitless. Macy Williams drove in Magoffin County’s lone run, which Abby Barnett scored.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Pikeville for a regular season finale on Thursday, May 15.
