Magoffin County pulls away to defeat Phelps, 44-34

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County pulled away to defeat visiting Phelps 44-34 in a girls’ high school basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Showing improvement, Magoffin County recorded its second win in three games.

After claiming the win, Magoffin County improved to 3-17.

Phelps dropped to 5-12 following the loss.

Moving ahead early, Magoffin County outscored 15th Region rival Phelps 14-11 in the first quarter. Magoffin County outscored Phelps 13-4 in the second quarter to lead 27-15 at halftime.

Under the direction of head coach Justin Williams, Magoffin County led 34-24 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Nearly recording a double-double, Angel Mullis scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the win.

Accompanying Mullis in double figures for the Lady Hornets, Karah Lafferty scored 10 points.

Contributing offensively for Magoffin County in the victory, Kennedy Williams (six points), Abby Barnett (three points), Kara Risner (two points), Charla Lykins (two points) and Jaylen McCarty (two points) provided additional scoring.

Caleigh McCoy scored 12 points to pace Phelps. McCoy was the only Phelps player to reach double figures in scoring.

Along with McCoy, Phelps received scoring from Amelia Casey (seven points), Faith Potter (seven points), Ivy Layne (five points) and Skylar Rife (three points).

Magoffin County defeated Phelps for the second time in the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season.
