Magoffin County rolls past Phelps, 100-65

PHELPS — Bouncing back to win after suffering a loss to Pike County Central at the start of the week, Magoffin County rolled past Phelps 100-65 in a boys’ high school basketball regular season finale on Friday, Feb. 17.

After posting the win, Magoffin County improved to 16-10.

Longtime 15th Region rivals, Magoffin County and Phelps met for the first time in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.

Magoffin County shot 60 percent (36-of-60) from the field. The Hornets from Salyersville made eight of 23 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 34.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Magoffin County shot 76.9 percent (20-of-26) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett scored 27 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett connected on 10 of 12 shot attempts from inside the arc. The Hornets’ leading scorer made all seven of his free throw attempts.

Following Barnett’s leading offensive performance, Ben Lafferty scored 21 points for the Hornets.

Under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, Magoffin County featured four scorers in double figures with Walker Russell netting 13 points and Ethan Salyer tallying 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker and Zane Whitaker added nine points apiece.

Magoffin County received scoring from eight different players. Brennan Hansen, Noah Sammons and Colin Litteral each chipped in three points for 57th District member Magoffin County.

Lafferty paced Magoffin County inside, clearing out eight rebounds.
