Magoffin County set to face Pikeville in Mountain Schoolboy Classic

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County is scheduled to meet Pikeville in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.

The Hornets were slated to host Paintsville for a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Feb. 19.

After dropping three straight games, determined Magoffin County edged visiting Martin County 66-64 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 13. The Hornets carried a 7-6 overall record out of the district matchup versus Martin County.

The Mountain Schoolboy Classic will feature some of the top boys’ high school basketball teams from the 15th Region.

Pikeville dropped a game to 14th Region title contender Knott County Central earlier in the week. Knott County Central topped the Panthers 59-55 at Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Following the loss to Knott County Central, Pikeville dropped to 7-5. The Panthers have notched wins over Betsy Layne, East Ridge, Shelby Valley, Madison Central, Belfry and Lawrence County. The Panthers have posted a pair of wins over 59th District rival Shelby Valley. In addition to Knott County Central, Pikeville has dropped games to North Laurel, East Ridge, Harlan County and Boyd County.

The Hornets and Panthers are poised to meet for the first time in the 2020-21 boys’ high school basketball season.
