Magoffin County shows improvement, compiles winning record

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County showed improvement throughout the 2023 high school softball season, compiling a winning record.

The Lady Hornets, under the direction of Coach Tony Skaggs, exited the 2023 high school softball season 17-12. Magoffin County put together a winning record after ending the 2022 high school softball season 10-11.

Junior pitcher Jaden Williams led Magoffin County during the 2023 season, emerging as one of the top high school softball players in Eastern Kentucky. Williams made 27 starts in the circle, finishing 17-10 with a 3.52 ERA and 150 strikeouts. At the plate, Williams, a productive hitter, batted .478 with 43 hits, 45 RBIs, 12 home runs and five runs.

Williams was among the most featured hitters in the 15th Region throughout the 2023 season.

Magoffin County featured a pair of hitters batting over .400. Ranking as Magoffin County’s second-leading hitter, Abby Barnett batted .405 with 34 hits, 22 RBIs, four doubles, one triple and six home runs.

Additional key players for Magoffin County in the 2023 season included Katie Howard, Kayleigh Lemaster, Katie Carty, Jaylynn Lafferty, Rylie Castle, Makenna Jordan, Kiley Lemaster and Kayda Carty.

Eight different Magoffin County players batted .300 or better. As a team, Magoffin County batted .363.

Paintsville managed to edge Magoffin County 4-3 in the semifinals of the 57th District Softball Tournament. The loss to Paintsville eliminated Magoffin County from the 2023 high school softball season.

Poised to carry momentum into the 2024 high school softball season, Magoffin County will feature several experienced players on the field in its next campaign.
