Magoffin County to host Prestonsburg for 2023-24 season opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is slated to host 15th Region rival Prestonsburg for its opener in the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Familiar foes from bordering districts, Magoffin County and Prestonsburg met twice during the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season. Magoffin County dropped a pair of games to Prestonsburg in the previous prep hoops campaign.

Following a loss to Martin County in the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2022-23 season 10-19.

Reaching double digits in wins, Magoffin County showed improvement throughout the 2022-23 season.

Several experienced players are due to be back on the court for Magoffin County in the 2023-24 season. Second-leading scorer and rebounder Karah Lafferty is among the players due back on the court for former 15th Region champion Magoffin County. Lafferty averaged 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for Magoffin County in the 2022-23 season.

Following a loss to Floyd Central in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Prestonsburg exited the 2022-23 season 12-18.

Magoffin County’s complete schedule for the 2023-24 season will be finalized and published in a future edition. The Lady Hornets will open preseason practice in mid-October.
