SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County will host 15th Region rival Prestonsburg for its opening game in the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Familiar foes, Magoffin County and Prestonsburg compete in bordering districts.
Magoffin County suffered two losses to Prestonsburg in less than two weeks during the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season.
Dealing Magoffin County a loss in a season opener, Prestonsburg prevailed 49-30 on Nov. 29, 2022. Then, less than two weeks later on Dec. 12, 2022, Prestonsburg pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 66-36.
After suffering a loss to eventual champion Martin County in the semifinals of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County concluded its 2022-23 season 10-19.
Under the guidance of Coach Justin Williams, Magoffin County showed improvement in the previous girls’ high school basketball campaign.
A loss to Floyd Central in the semifinals of the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament ended Prestonsburg’s 2022-23 season.
Prestonsburg, under the direction of Coach Brandon Kidd, exited the 2022-23 season 12-18.
Magoffin County is slated to visit Prestonsburg for a game in the second half of the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season on Monday, Feb. 12.
Both Magoffin County and Prestonsburg opened preseason practice in mid-October.
Tip-off for the upcoming season opener between the Magoffin County and Prestonsburg girls’ basketball teams is set for 7:30 p.m.
