Magoffin County to host Shelby Valley for home opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Shelby Valley for its home opener in the 2022 high school softball season on Monday, March 21.

Familiar foes, Magoffin County and Shelby Valley are longtime 15th Region rivals.

The Lady Hornets, under the direction of head coach Tony Skaggs, pulled away to defeat host Morgan County 13-3 in a season opener in West Liberty on Tuesday, March 15.

Magoffin County was visiting East Ridge on Wednesday, March 16. Results from the Magoffin County-East Ridge softball game were unavailable at press time.

Shelby Valley is slated to visit Paintsville for its season opener on Saturday, March 19. Head coach David Bowling guides 59th District member Shelby Valley.

Magoffin County dropped two games to Shelby Valley during the 2021 high school softball season. Shelby Valley defeated Magoffin County 11-5 and 5-4 in a pair of games in 2021.

Following a loss to Johnson Central in the semifinals of the 15th Region Softball Tournament, Shelby Valley exited the 2021 season 13-20. Shelby Valley, which finished runner-up to Pikeville in the 2021 59th District Softball Tournament, welcomed back several experienced players for the current campaign.

Both Magoffin County and Shelby Valley opened preseason practice in February.

First pitch for the Magoffin County-Shelby Valley softball game is set for 6 p.m.
