2021 Rogers Scholar Katie Howard, a student at Magoffin County High School, partnered with Helping Hearts to provide Christmas gifts for residents at Salyersville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for her community service project. Howard reached out to teachers, friends, and family members and asked each to “adopt” a resident and help purchase holiday gifts. “It is a very humbling and joyful experience to be able to help provide Christmas presents to the nursing home,” she said. “I am so appreciative and thankful for the support by my school, community, and family and friends to help make Christmas special for these residents.” Each graduate of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program is required to complete a community service project.
