Shirley Ann ((Thompson) Prater

Shirley Ann Thompson Prater Gevedon Conley, 82, formerly of Mt. Sterling, KY, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Frankfort, KY. Born on March 31, 1942, in Helechawa, KY to Kenneth Opolis and Roxie Mae (Nickell) Thompson, Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved her family and friends, and found joy in utilizing her outstanding cooking skills so that no one left her home hungry. Her hobby was gardening, particularly her flowers, and she took great delight in canning and freezing produce from her vegetable garden. Her love of travel allowed her to have many memorable experiences. She loved animals and, whether in the house or the barn, they became her pets. Music was one of her gifts, and she used her talent to sing and play the piano and organ at Lakeview Community Church where she attended. Shirley was strong in her faith and spiritual belief. Her desire was that all of her family would be together in heaven.

She graduated in 1959 from Mt. Carmel High School, Vancleve, KY, and obtained her degree from Fugazzi College of Business & Technology, Lexington, KY. She worked as a medical transcriptionist and was credentialed and served as the Director of Health Information Management at Morgan County Appalachian Regional Healthcare until her retirement.

She married William Charles Prater in 1962 until his death in 1963. To this union one child was born, Charlene Prater McDonald. In 1964 she married Rodney Gerald Gevedon. To this union Rodney Gevedon was born. She became stepmother to Frances Rose Gevedon Rexroat and Gerald Lee Gevedon. She married Wendell Lee Conley of Salyersville, KY in 1999 until her passing. She was stepmother to Jeana Lynelle Conley Gilbert and Gregory Wendell Conley.

Her parents preceded her in death, as well as her brother David Kenneth Thompson, her infant sister Hazel Thompson, and grandson Kaleb Alan McDonald. She is survived by one daughter Brenda Charlene (Prater) McDonald (Greg), Veedersburg, IN; one son Rodney Thompson Gevedon (Gretta), Wallingford, KY; two step sons Gerald Lee Gevedon (Debra), Lexington, KY, Greg Conley (Ruth), Salyersville, KY; two step daughters Frances Rose (Gevedon) Rexroat (Dariel), Frankfort, KY, Jeanna (Conley) Gilbert (Patrick); three grandchildren Kristen McDonald, Kelsey (McDonald) Pool (Chase), Karter McDonald, Jordan Gevedon, Jadyn Gevedon; three great-grandsons Gauge, Silas, and Isaiah Pool; one sister Brenda Alice (Thompson) Ruth (Ken), Cape Girardeau, MO; several nieces and nephews, and many other family and friends.

The family would like to thank Bluegrass Hospice Care for their loving care and attention to Shirley and for support to her loved ones.

Services will be held at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home, West Liberty, KY, on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 1 PM. Viewing for the immediate family and friends will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; public viewing from 11:30 to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Shirley has requested that donations be made to Hillsboro Nazarene Church or Lakeview Community Church.
