BETSY LAYNE – Sophomore Presley Smith went 2-for-3 and collected three RBIs to lead visiting Magoffin County over Betsy Layne 14-3 in five innings in a high school softball game on Thursday, April 8.
Smith finished with a double and a triple while scoring three runs. In addition to her performance at the plate, Smith was 2-of-2 on stolen base attempts. Smith is among the state’s top high school softball players in the 2023 class.
The Hornets forced Betsy Layne to play from behind throughout the game. Betsy Layne, a team from the 58th District, found itself limited offensively.
Magoffin County plated 14 runs on nine hits. Kaylee Morrison and Jaylynn Lafferty added two hits and one RBI apiece for the Hornets.
Contributing at the plate for Magoffin County, Katie Howard, Scarlett McCarty and Emilee Bailey delivered one hit apiece. McCarty also drove in three runs.
Magoffin County pitcher Holly Handshoe earned the win in the circle. Handshoe allowed three runs on three hits while recording six strikeouts.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Betsy Layne for a late-season game on May 18.
