SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Estill County for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept 25.
The Hornets and Engineers are longtime rivals. Estill County has defeated Magoffin County in back-to-back seasons. However, Magoffin County notched a win over Estill County during the 2023 high school football season.
Estill County pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 43-22 in the two high school football programs’ last meeting on Friday, Sept. 26, 2025.
Class 3A, District 8 is comprised of Magoffin County, Estill County, Lawrence County, Letcher County Central and Powell County. Lawrence County is the reigning Class 3A, District 8 champion.
Magoffin County is 2-3. The Hornets have notched wins over Floyd Central and West Carter. Magoffin County has lost games to Rowan County, Perry County Central and Winfield (W.Va.).
Estill County is 4-1. The Engineers have notched wins over Western Hills, Garrard County, Bath County and Montgomery County. Estill County has lost to Breathitt County.
Magoffin County has other games scheduled versus Powell County, Letcher County Central, Pike County Central and Lawrence County. Head coach Nathan Perkins guides the Hornets.
