SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County notched its first win in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season at home, defeating visiting Cordia 54-30 on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Following the win, Magoffin County evened its record to 1-1.
With the loss, Cordia dropped to 1-1.
Magoffin County shot 30 percent (21-of-70) from the field. The Lady Hornets shot 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.
Magoffin County excelled around the goal, outrebounding Cordia 55-25.
Angel Mullis led Magoffin County to the win. Recording a game-high double-double for the Lady Hornets, Mullis scored 27 points and pulled down 21 rebounds. Mullis shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from inside the arc.
Nearly reaching double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Karah Lafferty netted nine points. Finishing one field goal shot of reaching double figures for Magoffin County, Jaylee Reed contributed eight points.
Abby Barnett (five points), Skyla Carty (three points) and Macy Williams (two points) were the additional scorers for Magoffin County in the win.
Cordia shot only 25.6 percent (10-of-39) from the field. The Lady Lions finished five-of-21 (23.8 percent) from three-point range.
Cordia shot 38.5 percent (five-of-13) from the free throw line.
Aaliyah Gibson scored 12 points to lead Cordia in the matchup. Narrowly missing double figures for Cordia, Krista Lewis netted nine points.
Rounding out Cordia’s individual scoring, Mackenzie Allen, Madison Combs and Kelly Shepherd chipped in three points apiece.
Magoffin County bounced back to win after dropping its season opener to Prestonsburg on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
