SALYERSVILLE — Making her college choice official, Magoffin County High School senior runner Ali Cantrell signed with the University of Pikeville cross country and track and field programs during a ceremony held at MCHS on Friday, Feb. 3.
Cantrell, who competes for MCHS head coach Tonya Ward, chose to continue her academic and athletic career close to home. The Magoffin County student-athlete has excelled throughout her high school career.
On the next level, Cantrell will compete for University of Pikeville head coach John Biery. Cantrell is in her final high school semester. She is preparing to compete in the 2023 track and field season.
The University of Pikeville will join the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) beginning with the 2023-24 schoolyear.
UPIKE is slated to become the third AAC member from Kentucky, joining Kentucky Christian University and Union College.
The conference includes 16 full members. The University of the Cumberlands and Georgetown College maintain affiliate membership within the AAC.
Cantrell is set to resume competing for the Magoffin County track and field team in March.
