Hornets drop Homecoming game to Russell

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County continued to pick up yardage but was held out of the endzone and couldn’t limit its opponent as Russell pulled away to win 38-0 on Friday, Sept. 13.

The Hornets hosted the Red Devils in a Homecoming game.

Magoffin County and Russell, Class 3A rivals, met for a non-district matchup.

Following the loss, Magoffin County fell to 1-3.

Russell evened its record to 2-2 after notching the win.

Quarterback Elijah Hankins led Russell to the win. Through the air, Hankins completed six passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns. Hankins, who threw one interception, paced Russell in passing and rushing. On the ground, Hankins rushed six times for 63 yards and one touchdown.

Caden Pennington emerged as Russell’s leading receiver.

Pennington hauled in two receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

Contributing to Russell’s aerial attack, which featured multiple explosive plays, Caden Mitchell and Ben Botten hauled in one touchdown pass reception apiece.

Defensively for Russell, Wyatt Hudson recorded a game-high 11 tackles. Delivering for Russell in its defensive secondary, Kanenan Jacobs and Griffin Fisher each supplied one interception.

Providing a lift on special teams for Russell, Totten made each of his five PAT attempts and lone field goal attempt.

As a team, Russell rushed 19 times for 135 yards and one touchdown.

Magoffin County finished with 179 yards of total offense in the non-district matchup.

Blake Wireman paced Magoffin County offensively, rushing 11 times for 102 yards.

Aiding Magoffin County on the ground, Braxton Montgomery rushed nine times for 28 yards.

Through the air for Magoffin County, Dason Burchett completed four passes for 55 yards but was intercepted twice.

Brayden Standifer hauled in three receptions for 42 yards to lead Magoffin County’s receivers.

Standifer paced Magoffin County defensively, recording eight tackles, two tackles for losses and one interception.

Following Standifer, Curtis Jenkins posted six tackles for the Hornets.

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Martin County for its next game on Friday, Sept. 20.
