Hornets drop district opener to Belfry

BELFRY — Magoffin County was limited offensively as Belfry prevailed 41-0 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The Hornets visited the Pirates for a Class 3A, District 8 opener.

With the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 1-5 overall and opened 0-1 in Class 3A, District 8.

Belfry improved to 4-2 overall and opened 1-0 in Class 3A, District 8 after notching the win.

The Pirates pulled away for the win in the second half.

Belfry led 7-0 at the conclusion of the opening quarter.

Extending its lead, Belfry entered halftime ahead 21-0.

Magoffin County rushed 33 times for 102 yards in the district matchup. Braxton Montgomery paced Magoffin County, rushing 13 times for 60 yards. Following Montgomery in Magoffin County’s offensive attack, Blake Wireman rushed 10 times for 39 yards.

Through the air for Magoffin County, Dason Burchett completed two passes to Blake Wireman for 39 yards.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Brayden Standifer recorded a team-high nine tackles. Following Standifer in Magoffin County’s defensive effort, Montgomery, Burchett, John Fultz, Curtis Jenkins and Jackson Gilliland each posted five tackles for the Hornets. Delivering a turnover for Magoffin County, Gilliland recorded one interception.

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Powell County for another Class 3A, District 8 matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.
