SALYERSVILLE — Junior guard Walker Russell emerged as the leader for Magoffin County during the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season.

The lone returning starter from Magoffin County’s 2023-24 15th Region boys’ basketball title team, Russell paced the Hornets during his junior campaign. As a junior, Russell led Magoffin County in both scoring and rebounding.

Russell averaged a team-high 26.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Hornets. Since early-December, over 27 games, Russell scored 710 points and claimed 247 rebounds. Russell is among the top boys’ high school basketball players in the 15th Region.

Along with Russell, Magoffin County’s attack in the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season featured Parker Bowling (8.9 ppg), Tayte Hall (8.1 ppg), Michael Trusty (5.3 ppg), Dason Burchett (4.7 ppg), Jackson Gilliland (4.5 ppg), Evan Reed, Caleb Lovely, Noah Gibson, Matthew Hall and Trey Rudd.

Magoffin County won its opening game in the 2024-25 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament, topping East Ridge. After suffering a loss to Phelps in the second round of the 2024-25 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited its latest season 7-22.

Following the setback to Phelps, Magoffin County has turned its focus to the offseason. Several experienced players will be back on the court for Magoffin County in the 2025-26 boys’ high school basketball season, which is slated to tip off in December.
