More cameras at the park, roads to be resurfaced

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met in special session on Tuesday, April 8, to discuss resurfacing county roads.

The court approved a proposal from Bates Security for additional cameras additions at Ramey Memorial Park and Battlefield Park to help cover the new additions at each park.

As they have to do every year, they also approved to advertise for bids for bulk diesel fuel and gasoline; motor oil and grease; culvert, tile, and pipe; gravel and rock; blacktop/asphalt; cold patch and chip seal oil; gravel and other road material hauling services.

They approved an agreement and resolution with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Transportation Cabinet, for the resurfacing of county roads with 2024-2025 Flex Funds. Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman explained that they do not receive as much funding as they did several years ago because of how the secondary roads are rated, but they were awarded funds for portions of Jellico Road and Kelly Branch.

They agreed to use coal severance line item funding for projects, which will include two backup generators for the county and improvements at the Community Center for the new tech center.

In a related action, they approved to request the use of Area Development Funds (ADF) for the Community Center improvements, for further funding of the same project as above.

The court approved a resolution for the 2026 Recycling Grant Program, with the county applying for funds to pay for two new compactors for the recycling center.

Magistrate District 3 Sam Bailey was not in attendance at the special meeting.

The next regularly scheduled Magoffin County Fiscal Court meeting is tentatively slated for Tuesday, April 15.
