Barnett scores 3,000th point in Magoffin County’s win

Senior Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 32 points to lead Magoffin County over visiting Johnson Central in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Barnett scored his 3,000th career point during the 57th District matchup. Barnett is knocking on the door of being Magoffin County’s all-time highest scorer, currently held by Leonard Carpenter, who played basketball for Salyersville High School from 1949 to 1953, and became the first person in the state’s history to score 3,000 points. As of press time, Carpenter, who was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2011, holds the Magoffin County all-time scoring record with 3,048 points in his career. Photo || Jim Arnett

SALYERSVILLE — Delivering a dominant performance, Magoffin County pulled away to defeat rival Johnson Central 72-32 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 8-7 overall and opened 1-0 in the 57th District.

Johnson Central dropped to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the 57th District after suffering the loss.

Taking control early, Magoffin County outscored Johnson Central 19-8 in the first quarter.

Magoffin County led 40-20 at halftime and extended its lead after the intermission period.

The Hornets led 64-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Senior guard Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 32 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett scored his 3,000th career point during Magoffin County’s convincing victory.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker netted 17 points.

Contributing to the district win, Zane Whitaker (eight points), Walker Russell (four points), Ethan Salyer (four points), Ian McCarty (three points), Reed Meadows (two points) and Jackson Gilliland (two points) provided Magoffin County’s additional scoring.

Freshman forward/guard Austin Slone was the only Johnson Central player to reach double figures. Slone scored a team-high 11 points to pace the Golden Eagles.
Along with Slone, Johnson Central received scoring from Brayden Shepherd (five points), Andrew Meeks (four points), Jaidon Daniel (four points), Kyle Rose (two points), Dawson Montgomery (two points), Kyler Callaham (two points) and Kaleb Callaham (two points).

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Pike County Central for a non-district game on Friday, Jan. 12. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Pike County Central matchup is set for 7:30 p.m.
