Chloteen McFarlan Wheeler

Chloteen McFarlan Wheeler, age 93, passed away on January 6, 2023. She was born February 25, 1929, in Sciotoville, Ohio. Her parents were Alex McFarlan and Ella Walters McFarlan. Chloteen had two sisters, Virginia (Stanley) Gardner, and Sarah Katherine (John) Conley, and one brother Alexander McFarlan II (Infant).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Lou Ella McFarlan, one sister, Virginia Gardner, one brother, Alexander McFarlan II, and husband, Oscar Wheeler, Jr..

Chloteen and Oscar Wheeler, Jr. were married on March 18, 1950, at the Prater United Methodist Church, Salyersville, Kentucky.

They had two daughters, Brenda Dawne (David) Reed of Santa Teresa, New Mexico and Patricia Beth (John) Helton of Westlake Village, California. She is also survived by sister Sarah Katheryn (John) Conley of Westerville, Ohio, nieces Cheryl Gardner (Jack) Cook, Marsha Gardner (Paul Eddie) Arnett, Janine Conley (Mark) Mayville, Kimberly Conley (Robert) Kjelland, and Jody Miller (Rick) Hale.

Chloteen attended Magoffin County Schools and was valedictorian of her senior class. She was elected the high school’s May Queen her sophomore and senior years by the popular vote of all the student body. She believed in working hard to achieve her goals and taught her daughters to do the same. She was kind, generous, honest, and lived by the Golden Rule. She was a loving mother and a good friend to many. She lived a long and useful life, and we know she is in Heaven, where we will all get together in love and peace.

Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher in the Magoffin County Schools. She was a faithful member of the Prater United Methodist Church since she was a child. She was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher there. She and Buena Ely started the first Girl Scout troop in Magoffin County, and she was an active member of the 4-H Family Council. She enjoyed studying her Bible, making quilts for her family, taking photos, working on her photos albums, and writing in her daily journal. She was a good listener and problem solver. She won’t be forgotten, and the warmth and joy she brought to us all will live on forever.

Chloteen lost her husband in a tragic car accident, April 12, 1995, at Staffordsville, Kentucky. She continued to reside in the home they had built in Salyersville, Kentucky until her passing, with family and friends nearby. She loved all her family, her nieces, nephews, great nephews, great great nieces and nephews, as well as friends in her neighborhood.

One of her favorite poems was:

As long as hearts remember.
As long as hearts still care
We never lose the ones we love
They’re with us everywhere.

Funeral services for Chloteen McFarlan Wheeler will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 12, 2023 from the Prater Memorial United Methodist Church in Salyersville, Kentucky. Officiating the service will be Jack Howard. Burial will follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, Kentucky. The family will welcome friends anytime prior to funeral services Thursday, at the Prater Memorial United Methodist Church until time of funeral services.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Magoffin County Funeral Home.

    So sorry to hear of Cloteen’s passing. I waited at her parents’ house for the school bus during high school. I last saw her in 2002 along with sister Sarah Kay. The two of them were very close, and this must be a difficult for Sarah. Her parents were some of the nicest people I have ever known. Rest in peace, Cloteen.
