SALYERSVILLE – While the Primary Election is less than two weeks away, some local races for this fall are starting to take shape.
So far, two familiar names have filed for Salyersville mayor, with former Mayor James “Pete” Shepherd and the current incumbent Mayor Stanley Howard set to go head-to-head, yet, again.
Shepherd had long-said he wasn’t going to run, again, but cited the current state of the city and Water Works and his wish to build it back, again, as reasons for running.
Howard’s wife and the current city clerk, Karen, posted his announcement for reelection on social media, focusing on his work to improve parks and public spaces, streets and infrastructure, noting he was committed to finishing what he started.
For city council, Colin Ray Jackson, David Gardner, Brandy Lain and current Council Member Phyllis Howard have all filed. There are six seats available for Salyersville City Council.
Current City Councilman Paul Montgomery has stated he will not seek reelection.
Important to remember, it is still early in the election season for this fall, with the filing deadline for the non-partisan races included this year, which will be city council, city mayor, school board members, and soil and water conservation, set for June 2.
Check out next week’s paper for more on the May 19 Primary Election, or see page B9 of this issue of the SI for the current sample ballots. We will have more on voting precincts, voting hours, what is and is not on the ballot, and more election coverage in next week’s SI.
