Salyersville Masonic Lodge’s “Coats for Kids” 2023 is a wrap! Family Resource and Youth Service Directors from each Magoffin County school, along with District Judge Dennis Prater, representing the Salyersville Lodge, traveled to Pikeville last week, buying shoes and clothes for 150 underprivileged kids from Magoffin County, making sure they will be a little warmer this year. Donations collected throughout the year with fundraising events, horse shows and general donations, ended up totaling $15,000.
The Rack Room in Pikeville also extended discounts to the group, totaling $5,783 in savings, making the money stretch further.
Every year the FRSYC directors find the students who could benefit most from the program from each school and collect sizes and winter clothing needs, then the group goes shopping to buy coats, blankets, pillows, shoes, socks, etc., for the local children.
Paul Montgomery, a Salyersville City Councilman and Salyersville Masonic Lodge member who spearheads the project every year, said, “I am simply amazed at the generosity of the people around here. We fight and argue with one another but comes down to it we take care of our own. $15,000 from a small poor county like ours is unbelievable. So many to thank I can’t list them all without leaving someone out, from those who donated, to those who helped with the horse shows. I sincerely thank you.”
Montgomery said the goal for next year is to reach $20,000 in donations, which would help 200 students.
