Hornets fall to Hawks in high-scoring district battle

BUCKLEYS CREEK – Magoffin County thrived offensively but couldn’t match the home team as Pike County Central pulled away to win 82-52 in a high-scoring Class 3A, District 8 football game on Saturday, Oct. 17
.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in Class 3A, District 8.

Pike County Central improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the district with the win.

The district matchup between the Hornets and Hawks featured a record-breaking performance. Sophomore running back Matt Anderson led Pike County Central to the win, rushing 30 times for 409 yards and a state record nine touchdowns.

As a team, Pike County Central rushed 63 times for 797 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Behind Anderson, quarterback Tayvian Boykins rushed 16 times for 235 yards and two touchdowns for the Hawks.

Noah Iricks paced Pike County Central defensively, registering 11 tackles.

Pike County Central carried a lead out of each quarter. The Hawks led 44-24 at halftime.

Magoffin County, which owned multiple leads in the first half, completed 20 of 39 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns in the setback. Quarterback Lucas Litteral led Magoffin County, completing 18 of 37 passes for 239 and four touchdowns. Litteral threw one interception. On the ground, Litteral rushed 13 times for 106 yards and one touchdown.

Grayson Whitaker led Magoffin County in receiving. Whitaker hauled in six receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown. Contributing in the receiving column for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett and Caleb Wilson added one touchdown pass reception apiece. Barnett reeled in six receptions for 71 yards. Behind Barnett, Brad Standifer hauled in four receptions for 58 yards.

Magoffin County rushed 25 times for 175 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Chipping in on the ground for the Hornets, Barnett and Caleb Howard rushed for 35 yards and 21 yards, respectively.

Howard paced Magoffin County defensively, posting a game-high 14 tackles. Several players delivered defensively for the Hornets. Levi Rudd (eight tackles), Jacob Allen (eight tackles), Ian McCarty (seven tackles) and Christian Gamble (seven tackles) rounded out Magoffin County’s top five tacklers.
