SALYERSVILLE — Returning to the win column, Magoffin County knocked off Johnson Central 54-50 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game at Paul R. Setser Field House on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Following the win, Magoffin County improved to 9-7 overall and moved to 2-0 in the 57th District.
The Hornets prevailed following back-to-back losses.
Magoffin County carried a lead of each quarter, edging Johnson Central 15-13 in the opening period.
The Hornets, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, led 32-24 at halftime.
Magoffin County, remaining out in front after the break, led 38-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Aden Barnett led Magoffin County, scoring a game-high 20 points for the Hornets. Along with Barnett reaching double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker scored 12 points and Ben Lafferty netted 10 points.
The additional scorers for Magoffin County in the district game were Zane Whitaker (eight points), Walker Russell (four points) and Ethan Salyer (one point).
Recording a double-double, Ryan Rose scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Johnson Central in the district matchup. Rose led a trio of Johnson Central scorers in double figures as Austin Slone netted 13 points and David Fink posted 11 points.
Contributing to Johnson Central’s offensive effort, Jacob Grimm (seven points) and Mason Lawson (four points) provided the rest of the Golden Eagles’ scoring.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Johnson Central for a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Feb. 10.
