SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County has added reigning 16th Region champion Ashland to its schedule for the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
The Hornets are scheduled to visit the Tomcats on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
In another matchup, Magoffin County is slated to host Ashland for a return game on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
Tip-off for each Magoffin County-Ashland boys’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Hornets and Tomcats did not meet during the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.
Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, captured the 2022-23 2A, Section 8 championship. Following an overtime loss to longtime rival Paintsville in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2022-23 season 16-11.
Ashland excelled throughout the 2022-23 season, pulling away to beat nemesis Boyd County 73-51 in the 16th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game.
The Tomcats reached the second round of the Boys’ Sweet 16 State Tournament. Following a loss to eventual champion Warren Central in the second round of the state tournament, Ashland exited the 2022-23 season 23-12.

Both Magoffin County and Ashland will return several key players for the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
Defending 2A, Section 8 champion Magoffin County will finalize and release its 2023-24 schedule later in the offseason.
The Hornets will open preseason practice in mid-October.
