SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is preparing to host its first scrimmage in the 2022 high school football preseason.
The Hornets, under the direction of head coach John DeRossett, opened preseason practice on Monday, July 11. DeRossett is set to guide Magoffin County in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach.
Shelby Valley is scheduled to visit Magoffin County for the preseason session. Previously, Bath County was slated to join Magoffin County and Shelby Valley for the scrimmage. However, Bath County won’t be participating in the preseason.
East Carter may participate in the scrimmage. At press time, East Carter hadn’t confirmed or denied that it would join Magoffin County and Shelby Valley for the preseason event.
Magoffin County concluded the 2021 high school football season 6-4, finishing third in Class 3A, District 8. Several experienced players are back on the field for the Hornets.
Magoffin County’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.
Shelby Valley competes in Class 2A, District 8. The Wildcats, following a third-place finish in Class 2A, District 8, exited the 2021 high school football season 5-6. Shelby Valley’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Letcher County Central, Pike County Central, Floyd Central, North Laurel, West Carter, Prestonsburg, Martin County, East Ridge, Bath County and Hazard.
Magoffin County and Shelby Valley did not meet during the 2021 high school football season.
The start time for the Hornets’ upcoming scrimmage is 6:30 p.m.
