SALYERSVILLE – As reported last week, a recanvass of one of Magoffin County’s Primary Election races was held this morning at the courthouse.
The Republican race for Magoffin County judge/executive was recanvassed on May 28 at 9 a.m. in the Magoffin County Fiscal Court room of the Magoffin County Court House Albert Patrick Building.
A recanvass is a retabulation of the election returns, with the clerk re-reading the results for the requested races for the County Board of Elections and the totals recalculated to make sure they were correct.
The recanvass was requested by Tommy Howard, who lost by 13 votes, 733 to 746, to former Judge/Executive Charles “Doc” Hardin. With the recanvass, the totals stood as they did on Election Night, with Hardin still winning by 13 votes. As it stands, Hardin will go up against former Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman (D) in the General Election this fall.
Howard has until 4 p.m. Friday, May 29 to request a recount, which is a more in-depth retabulation of the election results that has to be held in circuit court.
The Magoffin County Primary Election results were certified as official on Tuesday with no changes found to the election totals reported last week.
