Ten Magoffin County High School students were recently recognized for their hard work and future aspirations during the annual senior scholarship awards ceremony held at the school on Tuesday, May 26. Through funds administered by Blue Grass Community Foundation, these students received financial support that will help them pursue higher education and prepare for successful futures.

Buck and Lillie May Patrick Scholarships
Ten graduating seniors were selected to receive the Buck and Lillie May Patrick Scholarship.

The scholarship was established at Blue Grass Community Foundation by the late Scotty Patrick in honor of his parents, Buck and Lillie May Patrick. Patrick loved his hometown and believed in the power of education to open doors to opportunity. He established the scholarship fund to help local graduates pursue their goals and create a bright future for themselves and their communities.

The Buck and Lillie May Patrick Scholarship is awarded annually to ten Magoffin County High School seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, involvement in school and community activities, and the desire and financial need to attend college.

Each recipient receives a $2,000 scholarship that is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.

This year’s recipients are:
• Gavin Ryan Arnett
• Abigail Barnett
• Grayden Cole
• Kori Fletcher
• Anna Gasparac
• Jackson Gilliland
• Cayman Hall
• Isaac Howard
• Marika Risner
• Troy Salyer

Edwin Paul Lyon III Scholarships
Two students were also honored as recipients of the Edwin Paul Lyon III Scholarship.

Established at Blue Grass Community Foundation in 2006 by Paul and Joann Lyon, the scholarship honors the memory of their son, Paul Lyon, a member of Magoffin County High School’s Class of 1991.

Paul’s life was tragically cut short by a drunk driver just days before his 21st birthday. In remembering Paul, the Lyon family continues to share an important message with graduating students: every choice made behind the wheel matters.

Impaired and distracted driving remain preventable causes of loss and heartbreak. Life itself will teach many lessons, but driving impaired or distracted should not be one of them. By making safe choices behind the wheel, young people can protect both their futures and the lives of others.

The scholarship honors Pual’s life and his belief in the importance of education. While George preferred working on cars to studying, he understood the value of creating opportunities through higher education. The scholarship celebrates students who demonstrate promise, determination, and the potential to succeed in college while helping make their educational goals more attainable.

This year’s Edwin Paul Lyon III Scholarship recipients are:
• Kori Fletcher
• Troy Salyer

Each student will receive a one-time scholarship award of $2,000.

Through these scholarships, the Patrick and Lyon families continue to invest in the success of Magoffin County High School graduates and help create opportunities for the next generation of community leaders.
