MAGOFFIN COUNTY – With the Special Olympics spring meet coming up, the Magoffin County Special Olympics is taking donations to cover uniform costs for the athletes.
Paul Montgomery told the Independent he is currently taking up money for the uniforms, thanking the list (see right) for already donating and reminding the public about the worthy cause.
“This is a great thing for these kids,” Montgomery said. “We accept athletes from ages 8 to 108 and everything is absolutely free of charge. What a lot of people don’t realize is it is incredibly expensive to raise a special needs child, so a lot of these families can’t afford costly extracurriculars and extensive practice schedules.
All the athletes get a little medal and it’s the most amazing thing to see them win – it just makes their day. They get a little slice of normalcy at these events and that’s so invaluable to these families.”
The spring meet will be held in April, with track and field activities featured and the group participates in bowl competitions in the fall.
Signups for athletes and volunteers will be held next Thursday, February 24, at 6 p.m. at Salyersville City Hall.
