Wireman nears 1,000 rushing yards

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County freshman running back Blake Wireman is nearing 1,000 rushing yards.

Wireman is excelling as a freshman for the Hornets.

Through Magoffin County’s first seven games in the 2024 high school football season, Wireman has rushed 119 times for 898 yards and eight touchdowns. The Magoffin County freshman is averaging 128.3 rushing yards per game.

Along with rushing, Wireman leads the Hornets in receiving. Wireman has hauled in nine receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown.

The leading scorer for Magoffin County, Wireman has tallied 60 points in seven games. Wireman has emerged as one of the state’s top young high school football running backs.

As a team, Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach John DeRossett, has rushed 303 times for 1,662 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Following Wireman in Magoffin County’s offensive attack, Braxton Montgomery has rushed 91 times for 477 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Dason Burchett is also producing on the ground and through the air for the Hornets. On the ground, Burchett has rushed 78 times for 188 yards and four touchdowns. Through the air, Burchett has completed 22 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns.

Jackson Gilliland is another productive receiver for the Hornets. Gilliland has hauled in six receptions for 81 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Brayden Standifer has recorded a team-high 61 tackles.

Prior to suffering an injury, longtime defensive leader Curtis Jenkins posted 51 tackles for the Hornets.

Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County. The Hornets are slated to host Lawrence County for a Class 3A, District 8 matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
