Words of Wisdom

From Erica Ash Gibson
Community Liasion, Salyersville Nursing and Rehabilitation

Residents at Salyersville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center are helped celebrate the Class of 2026 in a heartfelt and unique way by creating personalized graduation keepsakes filled with encouragement, wisdom, and love for local graduating seniors.

As part of the facility’s “Passing the Torch” graduation project, residents have prepared graduation-themed certificates, sharing handwritten words of advice, and helped assemble special graduation keepsake gifts for students at Magoffin County High School.

During graduation practice, seniors received:
• A handwritten card with words of wisdom and encouragement
• A special keepsake gift presented in a decorative bag
• A diploma-style certificate hand-tied with ribbon by residents and staff

Residents were invited to answer prompts such as “What is one thing you wish you knew at 18?” and “What advice would you give a graduate?”

Their responses ranged from heartfelt life lessons to humorous reminders and words of encouragement.

Resident Ryan, a graduate of Magoffin County High School, shared, “As you grow older, you do grow wiser,” while also reminding students to “Never forget where you came from” and to “Be kind because you never know what people are going through.”

Lucy reflected that “The secret to happiness is friendships” and encouraged graduates to “be who you are.”

Other residents shared practical wisdom and encouragement:
• “Don’t forget to always be thankful.” — Betty
• “Always show respect.” — Tomigene
• “Never stop loving your parents.” — Jewel
• “Your family matters most in life.” — Debra
• “Remember your education is worth it all.” — Nebraska
• “Never stop being honest.” — Josephine

Several residents also spoke about resilience, faith, and appreciating life:
• “If you don’t like the way the day ended, you can start again the next day.” — Sandra
• “Praying will help you through the hard times.” — Sandra
• “The secret to happiness is staying true to yourself.” — Paul
• “Don’t grow up too fast.” — Otis

A few residents added lighthearted reminders that brought smiles to staff and fellow residents alike:
• “I wish I knew naps are good when I was 18.” And “Be kind you never know when you need help opening a pickle jar” — Judy
• “Don’t forget to brush your teeth.” — Abigail

Staff members shared that the project has brought tremendous joy and purpose to residents, many of whom expressed how meaningful it felt to encourage the next generation.

“This project is about more than graduation. It’s about connection, community, and reminding our high school seniors that an entire generation of people is rooting for them,” stated Leann Gullett, Administrator at Salyersville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

These special keepsakes were presented to graduating seniors during graduation practice as a symbolic gesture of support

from one generation to the next.
Salyersville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center hopes the project continues to remind students that they are valued, supported, and capable of making a difference as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
