SALYERSVILLE — The Hornets are back on the gridiron.
Magoffin County opened preseason practice after the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period, returning to the gridiron on Friday, July 10.
Remaining active in the preseason, Magoffin County was attending an event at Morehead State University on Wednesday, July 15.
Nathan Perkins is preparing to guide Magoffin County in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach. Previously, Perkins served as Magoffin County Offensive Coordinator. On the middle school level, Perkins was Herald Whitaker’s head coach.
Perkins replaced former Magoffin County head coach John DeRossett, who stepped away from the Hornets’ football program in April.
Magoffin County compiled a 3-7 record in the 2025 high school football season.
The Hornets have regular season games scheduled versus Rowan County, Floyd Central, Perry County Central, West Carter, Winfield (W.Va.), Estill County, Powell County, Letcher County Central, Pike County Central and Lawrence County. Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8. The additional teams in Class 3A, District 8 are Estill County, Powell County, Letcher County Central and Lawrence County.
Magoffin County is slated to host Rowan County for its opening game in the 2026 high school football season on Friday, Aug. 21.
