Hornets sweep reigning 15th Region champion Martin County

INEZ – Magoffin County pulled off a regular season sweep of the reigning 15th Region champion on Monday, Feb. 22, defeating host Martin County 70-59.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the 57th District.

Martin County dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the district with the loss.

Individual results from the Magoffin County-Martin County boys’ basketball game were unavailable at press time.

In a previous matchup in Salyersville on Saturday, Feb. 13, Magoffin County outlasted Martin County 66-64.

Both Magoffin County and Martin County are scheduled to compete in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament in March. Martin County is the reigning 57th District boys’ basketball champion. The Cardinals pulled away to defeat Paintsville 56-41 in the 2019-20 57th District boys’ basketball title game.

The Hornets were hosting Perry County Central on Wednesday, Feb. 24. Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Floyd Central (Feb. 25, away), Paintsville (Feb. 27, home), Prestonsburg (March 1, away), Lawrence County (March 4, home) and Pike County Central (March 9, home). In addition, Martin County is slated to compete in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament March 5-6.

The Hornets’ remaining regular season schedule is subject to change.
