Magoffin County falls to Jenkins in 2021-22 season debut

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County was limited offensively as visiting Jenkins prevailed 33-23 in a low-scoring girls’ high school basketball season opener on Monday, Nov. 29.

Familiar 15th Region rivals, Magoffin County and Jenkins battled back and forth throughout the hoops matchup.

Jenkins put together multiple runs to win the low-scoring girls’ high school basketball game.

Magoffin County finished 7-of-38 from the field. The Hornets were 1-of-12 from 3-point range.

Magoffin County managed to shoot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the free throw line.

Narrowly missing double figures, Karah Lafferty scored nine points to lead the Hornets in the season opener.

Following Lafferty in scoring for Magoffin County, Kara Risner netted seven points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s individual scoring, Angel Mullis and Kennedy Williams added five points and two points, respectively.

Mullins led Magoffin County on the backboards, claiming 13 rebounds. Among the top girls’ high school basketball rebounders in the state, Mullis averaged 13.3 rebounds per game for Magoffin County during the 2020-21 season.

Second in the key category for Magoffin County, Williams grabbed five rebounds.

As a team, Magoffin County managed to pull down 30 rebounds.

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Jenkins for another game between the two 15th Region girls’ high school basketball teams on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
