SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County fell behind and couldn’t battle back as visiting Martin County pulled away to win 72-59 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Dec. 10.
The Hornets and Cardinals met for a 2021-22 57th District boys’ basketball opener.
Following the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 2-2 overall.
Martin County improved to 2-1 after registering the win.
The Hornets edged Martin County 15-14 in the first quarter but faltered. Martin County used a 16-7 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 30-22 at halftime.
Adding to its lead after the intermission period, former 15th Region champion Martin County outscored Magoffin County 16-9 in the third quarter.
Martin County shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field. The Cardinals were seven-of-17 from three-point range, shooting 41.2 percent beyond the arc.
Martin County shot 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line.
Luke Hale scored 28 points to lead Martin County to the win. Hale connected on four of seven three-point field goal attempts.
Behind Hale, Brady Dingess netted 15 points for the Cardinals.
Recording a double-double for Martin County, Jordan Dalton scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Contributing offensively, Matthew Linville (eight points), Dawson Mills (seven points), Brayden McKenzie (two points) and Blake Maynard (two points) provided the Cardinals’ additional scoring.
Magoffin County featured four scorers in double figures.
Ben Lafferty scored 20 points to pace the Hornets. Accompanying Lafferty in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett added 16 points, Zane Whitaker contributed 11 points and Grayson Whitaker provided 10 points.
Rounding out Magoffin County’s scoring, Ethan Salyer chipped in two points.
The Hornets are scheduled to visit Martin County for a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 18. 2022.
Both Magoffin County and Martin County are slated to compete in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament in March 2022.
