SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County High School senior Aden Barnett made his college choice official at the start of the week, signing with the University of Pikeville men’s basketball program during a ceremony held in the MCHS Library on Monday, May 20.
Barnett announced his commitment to the University of Pikeville men’s basketball program on Monday, April 29.
Earlier in the year, Barnett was honored as the 2023-24 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year and since then has received numerous All-State honors.
Barnett led Magoffin County to the 2023-24 15th Region boys’ basketball title. The all-time leading scorer for Magoffin County, Barnett averaged 28.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during his senior campaign. As a senior, Barnett scored 977 points and claimed 191 rebounds.
Barnett, who has excelled in multiple sports throughout his prep career, shot 82.8 percent from the free throw line in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
One of the state’s top student-athletes, Barnett led Magoffin County to the second round of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16.
Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, compiled a 22-14 record in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
UPIKE, under the guidance of Coach Tigh Compton, competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). The Bears compiled a 23-8 record in the 2023-24 men’s college basketball season. UPIKE has advanced to the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament in back-to-back seasons.
