Hornets knock off Wolfe County

CAMPTON — Winning its opening game in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season, Magoffin County knocked off host Wolfe County 80-74 on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 35 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Hornets. Barnett made 14 shots inside the arc.

Joining Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker scored 24 points while claiming seven rebounds.

Starting strong, Magoffin County outscored Wolfe County 17-8 in the first quarter.

The Hornets led 39-27 at halftime and maintained a double-digit lead heading into the final period.

Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, led 55-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Aiding Magoffin County in its win, Zane Whitaker (eight points), Reed Meadows (four points), Ethan Salyer (four points), Noah Sammons (three points) and Walker Russell (two points) supplied the Hornets’ additional scoring.

Recording a double-double, Caleb Creech scored 31 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Wolves. Creech connected on 12 of 23 shots from inside the arc.

Accompanying Creech in double figures for Wolfe County, Camden Oliver scored 11 points while Corey Flinchum and Dalton Voils netted 10 points apiece.

Chipping in offensively, Skylar Ritchie (six points), Austin McInnis (four points) and Jaden Hollon (two points) accounted for Wolfe County’s additional scoring.

Active inside for the Wolves, Ritchie claimed 11 rebounds of his own.

Magoffin County and Wolfe County aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
