JACKSON — Magoffin County managed to outhit Breathitt County 5-3 in a high school baseball season opener. However, Breathitt County held on to beat the Hornets 3-1 on Monday, March 17.
Breathitt County broke open a scoreless game in the bottom half of the third inning, plating three runs.
Magoffin County managed to answer, pushing across one run in the top half of the sixth inning. But the Hornets couldn’t match Breathitt County in the run column.
Sebastian Howard started on the mound for Breathitt County and earned the win.
Howard pitched four innings and tallied 10 strikeouts.
Danny Kayatin and Tatum Moore each pitched in relief for Breathitt County, posting two strikeouts apiece. Moore worked the final inning and secured the save.
Michael Trusty started on the mound for Magoffin County and suffered the loss.
Trusty pitched four and one-third innings, recording six strikeouts.
Hunter Arnett relieved Trusty on the mound for Magoffin County and pitched one and two-thirds innings. Arnett logged four strikeouts.
Moore (two hits, two RBIs) and Preston Turner (one hit) each contributed offensively for Breathitt County in its winning effort.
Offensively for the Hornets, Trusty (one hit), Gavin Arnett (one hit, one RBI), Mason Peck (one hit), Aden Montgomery (one hit) and Chance Risner (one hit) each produced at the plate.
Breathitt County overcame three errors to notch the win.
Steadier in the field, Magoffin County committed only one error.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Breathitt County for another matchup between the two high school baseball teams on Monday, April 7
