SALYERSVILLE — Preparing to compete in the 2024 high school football season, Magoffin County will attend a Morehead State Camp on Saturday, June 22.

The individual camp is designed for athletes in ninth grade and up. Helmets are required for the camp, which will feature on-field instruction and competition between offensive and defensive positions.

Magoffin County football players have been active throughout the offseason. Earlier in the month, a group of Magoffin County players attended legendary coach Hal Mumme’s Air Raid Camp held in Mississippi.

“Our guys are experiencing football,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “They are going to individual camps, team camps and other activities. It is great to see them going to improve themselves. More than that, traveling together builds team culture. At the Mumme Camp in Mississippi earlier in the month, they experienced dorm life and being on a college campus for three days. They also created relationships with other players, extending their social media information and staying in contact. It is good for the coaches, too. You might pick up one thing that will help your team. Getting to hang out with Coach Mumme and his wife was awesome. They are outstanding people.

“We will go to Morehead State right before the Dead Period. Our guys are working hard, they are bigger, stronger and faster. I am proud of them and anxious to see them compete with the other teams at Morehead State.”

Magoffin County will make multiple trips to Morehead State prior to kicking off the 2024 high school football season.

“We will go back to Morehead State for 7 on 7 and Big Man Challenges two times after the Dead Period,” added DeRossett. “I appreciate our parents, school and community helping our players get these opportunities. The season is right around the corner. We will be under those Friday night lights soon and the fields and stands throughout Kentucky will be full of good people in my opinion supporting the greatest sport on earth. They will be cheering on teams and having a good time. High school sports are the grassroots to many opportunities. Great relationships are made through athletics. I would encourage all young people to be a part of a team in whatever sport they choose.”
