Hornets to meet Golden Eagles in district tournament

INEZ — Magoffin County will meet familiar opponent Johnson Central in the semifinals of the 2024 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Martin County High School at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The Hornets swept a pair of games from the Golden Eagles earlier in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.

Magoffin County rolled past Johnson Central 72-32 in the two 57th District boys’ basketball teams’ first meeting in Salyersville on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

In a much closer game between the two longtime 57th District boys’ basketball rivals, Magoffin County pushed past Johnson Central 82-74 in Paintsville on Monday, Feb. 12.

Magoffin County is the number two seed for the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Head coach Scott Castle guides the Hornets.

Senior guard Aden Barnett is averaging around 30 points per game for title contender Magoffin County.

Johnson Central is the number three seed for the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Head coach Tommy McKenzie guides the Golden Eagles.

Freshman guard Austin Slone entered the final week of the regular season averaging 25.4 points per game for former perennial title contender Johnson Central.

Both Magoffin County and Johnson Central were eliminated in the semifinals of the 2023 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

The winner of the Magoffin County/Johnson Central matchup will advance to the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game on Thursday, Feb. 29.
