Lady Hornets beat Buckhorn for first win

HYDEN — Magoffin County pulled away to beat Buckhorn 49-35 for its first win in the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season during the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic at Leslie County High School on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Controlling the backboards, Magoffin County outrebounded Buckhorn 46-36.

Bella Trusty scored a game-high 18 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Trusty led a trio of Magoffin County scorers in double figures.

Delivering a double-double for Magoffin County, Macy Williams scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Accompanying Trusty and Williams in double figures for Magoffin County, Jaylee Reed netted 10 points.

Magoffin County received scoring from seven different players.

The additional scorers for Magoffin County were Emily Sluss (four points), Maddie Salyer (two points), Jerrica Reed (two points) and Abigail Bradley (one point).

Sharing game-high rebounding honors, Salyer pulled down 11 rebounds of her own.

Haley Stidham scored 11 points to pace Buckhorn in the matchup. Stidham was the only Buckhorn player to reach double figures. The other scorers for Buckhorn were Olivia Richardson (seven points), Haylee-Drew Blank (five points), Ariana Pedroza (five points), Taylor Miller (four points) and Chelsea Mullins (three points).

Clay County 39, Magoffin County 30: Magoffin County came up short as Clay County prevailed 39-30 in the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic at Leslie County High School on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Madison Pendland led Clay County with a game-high double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Accompanying Pendland in double figures for Clay County, Anna Samples and Faith Helton netted 10 points apiece.

Chipping in offensively, Sidney Jones (six points) and Daisy Samples (two points) rounded out Clay County’s scoring.

Bella Trusty scored 10 points to lead Magoffin County in the matchup. Trusty was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures.

Emily Sluss (five points), Maddie Salyer (four points), Bella Trusty (four points), Macy Williams (four points) and Abigail Bradley (three points) followed Trusty in Magoffin County’s scoring column.

Salyer paced Magoffin County inside, securing 10 rebounds.
