Magoffin County to host Cordia for season opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Cordia for its opener in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season on Monday, Nov. 28.

The opening tip for the Magoffin County-Cordia girls’ basketball game is slated for 6 p.m.

Magoffin County and Cordia did not meet during the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season.

In a short turnaround, Justin Williams-coached Magoffin County is scheduled to visit 15th Region rival Prestonsburg on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

A member of the 57th District, Magoffin County will meet several familiar opponents in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season. Magoffin County’s 2022-23 schedule includes games versus Cordia, Prestonsburg, Martin County, East Ridge, Breathitt County, Paintsville, Belfry, Johnson Central, Wolfe County, Buckhorn, Pike County Central, Phelps, Jenkins, Jackson City and Owsley County.

The Lady Hornets showed improvement during the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season. Following a loss to Martin County in the semifinals of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2021-22 season 7-24.

After falling to Knott County Central in the semifinals of the 53rd District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Cordia finished the 2021-22 season 1-19.

Several experienced players are due back on the court for Magoffin County in the 2022-23 season.

Magoffin County opened preseason practice in mid-October.
