SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (July 13, 2021) – As construction crews move closer to opening another four-lane section of the Mountain Parkway, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises motorists of an upcoming traffic switch.
Beginning Wednesday, July 14, westbound traffic will move to the newly paved westbound lanes at mile point 65 near the Cutino-Hager Road overpass. Westbound drivers will be able to use two lanes of roadway in this new Morgan County segment, which runs eight miles to mile point 57. Exit 60, the KY 134 interchange, will also open Wednesday.
Eastbound traffic will continue to use one lane in its current location. Crews will lay new asphalt and striping for what will become the left lane for eastbound traffic, then do another minor traffic to complete asphalt and striping on the right lane. Weather could affect the timing of these traffic switches.
“Drivers should use caution in the Mountain Parkway construction zone, reduce their speed, and watch for traffic signage,” said Aric Skaggs, project manager for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. “We are getting closer to fully opening four lanes of the Morgan County segment in the coming month.”
The 8.2-mile Morgan County project is the third of six segments to be completed for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. Previously completed segments include Salyersville/Restaurant Row and Magoffin Central. The 4.6-mile Magoffin West segment is currently under construction and the 11-mile Wolfe County segment is scheduled to be let for construction next year.
Planning for the Hwy 114 segment from Salyersville to Prestonsburg is ongoing.
About the Mountain Parkway Expansion
The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth. It is a key transportation project designed to close the only gap in a 400-mile, four-lane, high-speed corridor for commerce and mobility across Kentucky from Pikeville to Paducah. The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway to four lanes and extend the parkway by about 16 miles between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
