Drug trafficking arrests made

Magoffin County Sheriff Department made a traffic stop over the weekend, yielding two drug trafficking arrests.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, September 7, sheriff department officers were on KY 114 west when they saw a vehicle on the left shoulder and a woman walking around the vehicle, according to police reports.

Assuming the motorists needed assistances, officers pulled up to the vehicle and made contact with the female and ask several questions. A male appeared to be in the driver’s seat, but moved to the passenger’s seat while they were talking.

Both Roger Chaney and Maria Yates were questioned if they had anything on them or anything illegal in their car, and after a search of the vehicle police found items of interest for the investigation, according to police reports.

Magoffin County Sheriff Department officers found a container with a small latching lid under the driver’s seat and seemingly disguised to look like part of the seat, containing approximately 12 grams of methamphetamine, small bags generally used for the resale of drugs, a metal container with residue, spoons, straws and other drug paraphernalia.

Maria Yates, of Morehead, was charged with trafficking in the first degree for methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a vehicle on an expired license.

Roger Chaney was charged with trafficking for methamphetamine, giving false information to authorities, criminal littering for throwing drugs out of the vehicle, tampering with physical evidence, among other charges, as well as served with four outstanding warrants, one a felony indictment warrant for an alleged assault over a property dispute in Pike County.

Editor’s Note: The indictment or charge of a person by a grand jury or otherwise is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
