SALYERSVILLE – The community participated in a meeting last week for the newly-opened Magoffin County Animal Shelter.
Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matt Wireman asked the community to come to the shelter, located next to the recycling center, any day of the week to help clean, feed the animals, walk the animals and give the care and attention they need.
He said they have 15 kennels for dogs and can house eight cats, which they were already at capacity as of the September 23 meeting. Wireman explained their primary goal is strays, with owner surrenders secondary and only when they can.
Wireman also noted they are looking at starting a humane society, stating that if anyone is interested in that to call his office. He said they will need seven to 10 people committed to get that started just to have officers and a board, but they would be able to apply as a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
Donations can be arranged through the judge’s office, as well. For more information, to volunteer, donate or be involved in the humane society, call the Magoffin County Judge/Executive’s office at 606-349-2313.
