SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Tuesday, September 19, discussing ongoing projects, honoring Magoffin County veterans and renaming a couple of county roads.
The court approved the fund transfer of $40,000 from the general fund to the jail fund.
Deputy Judge Kevin Howard updated the court on ongoing projects, explaining that the security cameras are up at Ramey Memorial Park, as well as the 21 new benches and contractors are working on improvements for the veterans’ monument.
At the Half Mountain Battlefield Park, Howard said the basketball poles and backboards are installed and kids have already been playing basketball at the park. They just put up three new garbage receptacles and six new benches at the park, in time for the Walnut Festival, slated for September 30.
A horse show for the Hillbilly Christmas in July nonprofit organization is scheduled for this Saturday, September 23, at the Magoffin County Horse Park, having been rescheduled from last weekend due to weather. Another horse show is slated for October 14 for the Coats for Kids fundraiser.
Hinkle Blacktop Operations has informed Howard they will be doing the resurfacing of county roads the county had requested for this fall.
The next veterans’ dedications are scheduled for October 7, with the first set for at 11 a.m., for Raymond Craft on Spruce Pine, and another ceremony for the same day at 1 p.m. for Harry Watson at the mouth of Carver Road.
The fiscal court approved the tax rates from all taxing districts to be placed on tax bills, with Judge/Executive Matt Wireman explaining they do not set those rates, the individual taxing districts do.
They approved a joint resolution with the City of Salyersville for the Dixie Bridge to be known as Veterans Memorial Bridge, honoring all Magoffin County veterans past and present.
The court approved the resolution honoring Sergeant Harry Watson and ceremoniously renaming a portion of Carver Road after the World War II war hero who was killed in action in France.
As they do each year, they approved a resolution for the continuity of government, setting the line of succession for the county judge’s office in case of emergencies.
The court approved the agreement with Hinkle Contracting Company for resurfacing of already-approved county roads.
They approved the lease agreement with the Big Sandy Community and Technical College for the back portion of the community center, which they use for the Adult Education Program.
Per the residents’ petition, the court approved the change of the road name Cole Cemetery Road, located off Calvin Dingus Road, to Calvin Dingus Spur.
Similarly, they approved the adjacent landowners’ petition to change the road name Marion Hale Road, located off Mine Fork, to Bertha Tackett Road.
The court awarded disaster recovery administrative services to Wheeler Emergency Management Consulting, which can be used if the county were to have a significant disaster, streamlining the process when the services are needed. Judge Wireman also explained these administrative fees will be covered under FEMA.
The court also awarded professional grant writing services to Babbage Cofounder, which was instrumental in writing House Bill 9, with Judge Wireman explaining they will be able to apply for more grants that will likely be able to help secure more national funding to cover some key projects.
The next regularly scheduled Magoffin County Fiscal Court meeting is tentatively slated for October 17 at 6 p.m. at the Magoffin County Courthouse Albert Patrick Building.
