MCHS senior dies after Floyd Co. collision

MIDDLE CREEK – A Magoffin County High School senior died after a two-vehicle wreck on KY Rt. 114 near Prestonsburg on Sunday night.

On October 6, crews were called to the fatal collision at 9:29 p.m. at the junction of KY 114 and Owens Street.

Through their investigation, Kentucky State Police troopers determined that Keith Anderson was operating a 2010 Honda Insight when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, operated by Kenny Auxier. Anderson and Auxier were transported to medical facilities for treatment.

Kayla Nicole Elam, 17, of Salyersville, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet, was transported to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing by KSP Accident Reconstructionist, Detective Josh Scott.

Detective Scott was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Prestonsburg Fire Department, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.

Elam was a senior at Magoffin County High School. The high school posted the following on social media Monday evening:

The faculty and students of Magoffin County High School are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Hornet family. We would like to take this moment to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of senior Kayla Elam. Kayla was an intelligent, kind, and caring young lady who was loved by her friends and teachers.

She will be deeply missed, but we are confident that her memory will live on in all those who were privileged enough to have her in their lives.
