Shots fired, neighbor arrested

SALYERSVILLE – A woman was arrested Monday night after reportedly shooting toward her neighbor and his family.

On August 5, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy W. Lafferty received a complaint stating that Melissa Whitaker, 41, of Salyersville, drove by her neighbor and his family and discharged a firearm in their direction multiple times as they were working in the garden, according to the police report.

After taking a statement from the victim, police drove approximately 100 yards away to Whitaker’s residence, making contact with her. Whitaker told police that people were trying to break into her house and she was tired of it, according to the arrest citation.

Whitaker admitted to shooting her gun, but told law enforcement she didn’t see anyone when she was doing it.

She was taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where she was later released, facing the charge of first-degree wanton endangerment – discharge of a firearm. At press time, no court date has been scheduled in the felony case.

Editor’s Note: The indictment or charge of a person by a grand jury or otherwise is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
