SALYERSVILLE – Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on much of the eastern US on Friday, with Magoffin County no exception to that! Strong winds left more than 3,000 local households and businesses without electricity.
Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman updated the status of the county on Sunday on social media, commending the crews who worked around the clock to get the power, phones lines and internet back on line and roads reopened.
“I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to all the hardworking individuals who have been putting in so much effort to restore normalcy,” Wireman posted. “Both Licking Valley RECC and Kentucky Power crews have been tirelessly working to bring the power back online. Our county road crews, state road crews, rescue squad, Foothills crews, and local residents have also been out there, cutting trees and clearing roads. I truly appreciate the teamwork and patience shown by everyone during this trying time. Let’s remember those who have been hit much harder than us in neighboring states in our thoughts and prayers, and offer them our support in any way we can.”
Judge Wireman also declared a state of emergency for Magoffin County on Friday, citing the widespread power outages, flooding, downed trees and significant wind damage as the reason for the declaration, which allowed the county to be able to mobilize resources and provide support to those impacted by the severe weather.
